Adult Children of Alcoholics-Informed Anxiety Support
Growing up in the shadow of addiction, you didn’t just develop a personality; you developed a survival map. Anxiety isn't just a "feeling" for you - it’s a finely tuned radar, a constant scan of the room for the slightest shift in tone, footsteps or atmosphere. You learnt to manage everyone else's emotions while ignoring your own.
You spent your childhood being 'the strong one'. It's okay to be 'the supported one' now.
When you’ve spent decades on high alert, being told to "just breathe" can actually feel dangerous. To your nervous system, letting your guard down feels like an invitation for chaos. I understand that. My focus isn't on 're-living' the past, instead, we look at the patterns you carry into your life today. While we may talk about your history to understand your anxiety, our focus is on building safety, boundaries and calm in your life today.
You’ve spent your entire life looking out for everyone else, anticipating needs before they were even spoken. You’ve been the anchor for a long time.
This hour at Amber Healing is finally about you. It’s okay to put the armour down. It’s okay to be the supported one now.
I work with Adult Children of Alcoholics to help you move from 'surviving' your past to 'thriving' in your present. Together, we look at the roles you had to play and give you permission to set those burdens down so you can finally feel safe in your own life.
No, It's not a clinical trauma therapy. Think of this as stability work. We focus on who you are today. If you grew up in chaos, you likely developed "superpowers" like hyper-awareness and a need to fix everything. While those kept you safe then, they are exhausting you now. We’re simply building you a sturdier, more peaceful home in the present.
It’s more than normal - it’s a sign of how hard you’ve been working to hold everything together. Because we don't do "deep dive" trauma mining, we work at a pace that keeps you feeling safe. We focus on "widening your window" of tolerance so that you can handle your emotions without being overwhelmed by them.
You don't need a specific "event" to justify feeling this way. Growing up with addiction is often a "slow-drip" of stress rather than one single moment. If you feel like you’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop, or if you’re a chronic "people-pleaser," this work is for you regardless of your specific memories.
Think of it as a collaborative strategy session for your well-being. We might:
You’ve been the emotional caretaker for others for a long time. Shifting that focus to yourself isn't selfish - it's self-love. When you are no longer operating from a place of chronic depletion and anxiety, you actually show up more authentically for the people you love.
